Diversity is very important to FLYLINE

In a world where global markets have emerged, borders are vanishing—not only economically, but also culturally – globalization, with the movement of goods and people, has contributed in shared ideas, values and norms. In the digital era it is normal that companies operate throughout the world in diverse markets. While FLYLINE is located in Germany, the customers we assist are located all over the world. To satisfy all their varied requirements, it is critical to have a diverse staff. Diversity comes in all forms: age, gender, ethnicity, religion – and each element is present in FLYLINE. The cultural diversity is especially remarkable. 

Many languages, one team
With more than 50 nationalities represented amongst our employees, FLYLINE's inclusive attitude towards diversity is easy to see. My day-to-day experience shows that openness and multicultural work is indeed a practiced value: nobody is excluded due to his/her ethnicity, age, gender or religion. Quite the contrary: our philosophy is, ‘the more diverse, the better.’ Since we operate in many different markets, language is a key factor that brings people with many different backgrounds to our company, distinguishing and uniting us all at the same time. 

At FLYLINE we offer services in nine different languages at this time – English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Russian and Greek. But although we cover only 9 language-distinguished markets, within the various departments there are employees from all over the world who speak many other languages as well. Just within my team of 13 employees we have 12 different nationalities represented. This multicultural environment helps us break barriers and recognize our similarities as well as our differences.

Learn from other cultures
Working in a multicultural company has benefits not only for the business itself, but for the personal growth of the employees too. Diversity fosters creativity, acceptance and mutual respect, along with teamwork and productivity. Working together in a team and sharing experiences from different backgrounds brings new and innovative ideas. Moreover, diversity enhances the company’s reputation and exposure. 

Being surrounded by colleagues from different parts of the world has taught me a lot regarding their culture, beliefs, perspectives and the way of thinking. I have gotten to know a bit of the culture of many countries that I haven't visited, just by interacting with people at FLYLINE. You learn to respect and accept their differences, and stereotypes and prejudices fall away. Not only does your attitude towards others change, but also how you perceive their attitude towards you. If I were to work in an environment in which everyone came from the same country, I’d feel more pressure than I do here. One of the outcomes of working in a diverse company is that it reinforces that I am in the same position as the others.

Interview with a Team Leader of a 12-nationality-team
Jack Croft, one of FLYLINE's Team Leaders, explains in a short interview his experience working in a multi-cultural environment and leading a diverse team. 

Jonida Pacara: How does it feel to manage a diverse team of 12 nationalities?
Jack Croft: On a professional level all the Agents are well educated and it is hard to feel the cultural differences. Personally speaking, it is very interesting. It creates better bonds of friendship because there is a real genuine interest to get to know people. 

Jonida Pacara: What are the challenges you face?
Jack Croft: During my Team Leader training, my communication expert said: “it is not the receiver who doesn’t understand; it is the communicator who is not communicating effectively”. Probably my biggest challenge is changing the way I deliver information for all to understand.  

Jonida Pacara: What are the benefits of leading a multicultural team?
Jack Croft: Working with a diverse team allows me to broaden my understanding and application of management technics. I get to experience a variety of personalities, working attitudes and styles, and I must learn how to adapt to get the best out of people and integrate them in the team.  

Jonida Pacara: Do you think it would be easier to manage a team with members only from your country?
Jack Croft: Definitely not! I have come to appreciate the variety in the team. It motivates me to succeed in the role as a Team Leader and encourage the other team members to appreciate and enjoy the culture differences.
